Population Health

There are many factors that affect the health of human populations beyond the one-to-one interface between patient and health professional. Diet, lifestyle, the natural and built environments, genetic endowments, socioeconomic status, and the organisation of health service delivery are some of these factors. Our aim is to identify and understand the social, behavioural, environmental and genetic influences on health and to translate this understanding into effective health and social policy. We conduct research into the patterns, causes and prevention of illness, ageing and mental health in populations. We sponsor priority-driven research to improve the quality and effectiveness of primary health care and our researchers contribute to national policy debates. Health care financing, health costs and ageing; and the economic burden of illness and injury are studied. A multi-disciplinary approach is essential to much of our work, especially concerning the biosecurity challenges facing Australia. Throughout, our staff and research students strive for relevance, excellence, innovative methods and positive social impact.
