PhD research opportunity
The Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University and the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) is seeking applications for the Glenn Sanecki Alpine Scholarship. The scholarship is to support a PhD student undertaking research in the field of the physical or biological sciences in the alpine and sub-alpine areas of Kosciuszko National Park, or in, or partly in, other alpine/sub-alpine areas of Australia (subject to agreement with ANU and DECC).
This scholarship is in honour of Dr Glenn Sanecki who passed away in 2007. Glenn was passionate about the alpine environment and completed a PhD at The Australian National University on the distribution of small mammals in relation to natural and modified snow in the Australian Alps. Glenn worked for DECC in Kosciuszko National Park for many years from the 1990s onwards. During his time with DECC he made considerable contributions in relation to the monitoring of wildlife and flora, including weed control.
This scholarship is worth $20,427 tax-free (2009 rate) per year for three years full-time (with a possible 6 month extension), tenable at the Australian National University. The scholarship is co-funded by DECC and ANU.
Requirements: The eligibility requirements are a Bachelors Degree with first class honours or equivalent academic and professional qualifications. The scholarship is only open to Australian and New Zealand citizens and Permanent residents of Australia.

ANU PhD Mid-Year Entry Scholarships

A small number of ANU PhD Scholarships which provide a stipend are funded by Colleges which may be available through mid-year entry or at other times of the year. It is normal for recipients to undertake study on a full-time basis. However, in accordance with strict criteria, the scholarship may be awarded for part-time study. International scholars must undertake study on a full-time basis. It is expected that the scholarship normally will be taken up by 31 August in the year for which it is awarded, although, subject to the approval of the prospective supervisor, Head of Department and Dean/Director, a later start date may be possible. The date by which a scholarship must be taken up in a particular instance will be made clear in the formal letter of offer for the scholarship.

ANU PhD Scholarship in Pharmacogenomics

An exciting opportunity is available in the area of pharmacogenomics at the John Curtin School of Medical Research. The goal of this line of work is to conduct translational research aimed at elucidating molecular and genomic mechanisms that underlie drug action. The key question to be addressed is: "How is variability in therapeutic outcomes determined by genetic substrate?" Genes control drug metabolism, drug transport, disease susceptibility, and drug targets. The aim of the pharmacogenomics PhD studentship is therefore to conduct studies that elucidate the effects of genomic variation on outcomes relevant to drug response, particularly in psychiatric disorders. The student will learn key relevant topics in this area such as understanding the biology of candidate genes and pathways, the relationship of disease genes to drug response genes, defining drug response phenotypes, and addressing ethical, technical, and data analyses issues related to the establishment and management of large drug response data sets.

An exciting opportunity is available in the area of psychoneuroimmunology at the John Curtin School of Medical Research. The goal of this line of work is to conduct translational research that elucidates how environmental and psychological factors affect key brain functions through immune and endocrine mediators. The key question to be addressed is: "What are the fundamental mechanisms underlying brain-body interactions?" Immune and endocrine mediators modulate the effects of the environment on key outcomes such as stress response, depression and obesity. The aim of the psychoneuroimmunology PhD studentship is to elucidate the specific mechanisms and pathways by which immune and endocrine molecules are regulated by the environment and then signal the brain and other organs to cause disease-related outcomes. The student will learn key relevant topics in this area such as understanding the interactions between the immune and central nervous systems and will learn methods and techniques relevant to immunology, neuroscience and to models of disease, such as obesity and depression.

ARC Centre for Interactive Legume Research Scholarship

The ARC Centre for Interactive Legume Research is an internationally-renowned research network of plant scientists conducting high quality research into legumes and other plant species. The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) are available for study leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy and are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Because competition for the scholarships is intense, at ANU they are not awarded for study at the Master degree level. Successful applicants will study in areas in which the University has shown a particular research concentration.

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) is administering scholarships funded by the Department of Health and Ageing for part-time and full-time students applying to commence an APAC-accredited Masters or Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Scholarships are valued at $15,000 per annum for full-time students and $7,500 per annum for part-time students.
Requirements: To be eligible, applicants must meet one of the following:
- be from rural, regional or remote localities,
- be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander,
- have a culturally and linguistically diverse background,
- have a demonstrated commitment to working in these locations or with one or more of these populations.

A PhD scholarship is now available through a successful ARC Linkage application by collaborators at The Australian National University, Murdoch University and Proteomics International. The project is based on the development and application of 2D-LC proteomic chromatography techniques using the pathogen Stagonospora nodorum. This is a unique opportunity to develop an expertise in cutting-edge proteomics techniques.
The successful applicant will ideally have;
1. Upper IIA Honours degree (minimum).
2. A good working knowledge of biochemistry/biological chemistry.
3. A basic understanding of proteomics and/or protein separation techniques, preferably including the use of HPLC.
4. An understanding or demonstrated willingness to learn mass spectrometry.

The Fellowship is awarded annually on a competitive basis to permit students to travel overseas to attend a major international conference, summer school or to visit an overseas institution in order to gain valuable research or laboratory experience.
